It has been too hot to blog. All I would have said is, “I’m too hot. I need a shower/drink/nap/trip to anywhere with air conditioning. Then clouds appeared. Then a drop of water. Then thundershowers. Now it is cool again.
The heat accelerated the ripening of everything. Last spring I bought a few of those seed packets labeled “butterfly mix,” “meadows,” that sort of thing, and scattered the contents where I figured Julien wouldn’t mow down the sprouts. They sprouted and flowered. The way I garden, that’s a miracle in itself. Now I have a bonus in all those seed pods. I spread them on big sheets of paper where I now see little black seeds collecting. Next the seeds will go in little bags labeled with my own home-grown taxonomy: “blue knee-high,” “purple waist-high” or maybe, in a burst of specificity, “hollyhocks, pink.”
That’s it for now. I’m still recovering.

Oh.. I did that once here in Florida. Would love to get my hands on a wild seed mixture like that and bring it to Italy!!!

It couldn’t be simpler. I remember fewer garden centers in Umbria than we have here, but surely there is one, or maybe Amazon delivers — which it pretty much doesn’t, in this corner of France. Order one of many wildflower mixes — these days, I’d recommend the drought-tolerant one — plant the seeds in a sunny spot and stand back. Three or four months later, when the beautiful flowers are gone and things start looking a little ratty, the seed pods will be there. The colected seed is better than the mix because I can put the taller flowers in back; now everything is growing all over the place.

Heat necessitates slowing down. That’s why the French take their hols in July and August, no? I’m glad your wild flowers have bloomed so well. I have tried and failed to find such a mix here for an area that would really look gorgeous with that treatment (and I am such a believer in simple) …. do you know where I might find them in the US for next year?

Over here Google generally gives me companies in France and the UK. You can probably do better from there. Also, try Etsy. It’s amazing what they have for sale.

Yes, Google led me up several blind alleys earlier in the year. But I will try again and Etsy is a very good thought that hadn’t occurred to me 😊
